Defending First Amendment freedoms, equality, privacy rights and fundamental fairness requires constant vigilance and support. Each year, individuals and institutions demonstrate their commitment to those shared constitutional values through steady gifts and grants to the ACLU Foundation.
The ACLU is comprised of the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU Foundation. The ACLU Foundation is the arm of the ACLU that conducts our litigation and education efforts. Gifts to the ACLU Foundation are tax-deductible to the donor to the extent permissible by law.
Membership dues for donors who "join" and become card-carrying members of the ACLU are gifts to the American Civil Liberties Union. These dues and other gifts to the American Civil Liberties Union are not tax-deductible. Many donors choose to make their larger tax-deductible gifts to the ACLU Foundation and also make smaller gifts to the American Civil Liberties Union in order to maintain their "card-carrying" membership status with the ACLU.
