PHILADELPHIA – Following last night’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania has released the results of public polling that reveals the commonwealth’s voters seek solutions that prevent crime and improve people’s lives and a humane system of immigration.
The polling found that, while voters are most concerned about the economy, the majority of likely voters in Pennsylvania want commonsense, non-punitive policies that work to fix our broken immigration system and improve public safety by addressing the root causes of crime.
Specifically, the majority of Pennsylvania voters would support a candidate who supports creating a path to citizenship and streamlining the asylum application process at the border. They also would support a candidate who supports investments in programs, services, and resources that improve public safety and prevent crime.
The majority of voters in the commonwealth also firmly reject policies like building a border wall, increased deportations, and more mass incarceration.
“These polling results affirm that the majority of Pennsylvania voters have learned lessons and are tired of failed past policies and are ready to put people first,” said Mike Lee, executive director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania. “Whether you are a Democrat, a Republican, or an independent, those running for elected office should be aware that solutions-based policies are what Pennsylvania voters want.”
The polling consisted of a multi-day focus group and an online and text-to-web survey of 600 likely Pennsylvania voters from June 13-19, 2024.
