“I am calling about the election review proposed by Senate Republican leadership. The results of the 2020 election were checked and double-checked. It was a fair, accurate election, and our county election officials should be thanked for their work. If this review goes forward, it may come at great financial cost to the taxpayers and will harm our democracy. Please reject this anti-voter scam.”
PA Senate Pro Tempore Jake Corman has tasked Senator Cris Dush, chair of the Local Government committee, to spearhead a sham election review that will make a mockery of the Senate and undermine democracy in Pennsylvania. This move comes after the Senate’s first failed attempt to strong arm three counties—under threat of subpoena—to turn over virtually their entire election infrastructure, from voting machines to ballots to mail-in envelopes to the software and hardware that they use to operate their systems.
After every election, counties check the accuracy of the results, and, in 2020, 63 counties participated in a risk-limiting audit pilot program with the Pennsylvania Department of State. Those checks showed that the results were accurate.
If the Senate’s ruse goes forward, it could cost county taxpayers millions of dollars and will undermine faith in our democracy. The committee charged with overseeing this fishing expedition has no expertise in elections oversight and risks putting the November election and maybe the 2022 primary in jeopardy if it forces counties to replace their election systems.
